Risk Management

The final project for the PRT 508 course required our class to create a Risk Management plan for our organization that included an emergency action plan, safety measures for various scenarios, employment guidelines, traveling policies and numerous other aspects. This was a very in-depth project that I decided to focus on for the Hyde County 4-H program that I am currently operating and leading. Select the “Primary Artifact” button below to view the final project for this course. A summary of the course and a reflection on the artifact is below as well.

Summary

The Risk Management course for the PRTM degree program was a course that I initially had some ambivalence about at first. I was a little nervous about the whole idea of risk management and all it entails because I have seen the extremely detailed and ever-changing protocols that can be put in place for major organizations. A part of me was somewhat curious though, and Dr. Troy Carlton made learning about risk management a fun process. The pacing of this course was good and it walked you through the whole process of assessing and managing risks in a very simplistic format. The assignments and quizzes were utilized perfectly to reinforce learning and comprehension. One of the key takeaways from this course for me was the focus on negligence laws and constitutional laws regarding hiring practices. The focus on these laws was very beneficial to me considering the fact that I work with minors in the 4-H youth development program for North Carolina State University and must hire and manage volunteers for various programs. Dr. Carlton did a great job in helping me understand some of the compliance regulations of the University and why they must be put in place for everyone’s safety and protection. This course proved to be very informative and beneficial to me, especially in my daily work.

Reflection

The Risk Management plan that I created for the Hyde County 4-H program proved to be extremely beneficial during the current pandemic that the world is facing. The creation of this living document has made it a seamless process to implement policies and regulations that can keep all parties involved with our program safe. I was also able to update forms, policies, and procedures and have them combined into one document that can be easily accessed by all staff and authorized personnel. During the process of creating this plan, I learned that Risk Management is very detailed and thorough because it needs to be to ensure effectiveness. Every policy or restriction is necessary and is a critical component of the plan. The timing of this course was perfect, as our organization was updating our minors compliance policies and beginning a new volunteer training process. This was a huge change for all personnel within our organization, but this project made implementation and adaptation much more streamlined. Hyde County 4-H has adopted this Risk Management plan and we are still currently utilizing it as a guiding principle for assessing risk, especially during these uncertain times of the pandemic. The PRT 508 course has benefitted me greatly, despite my initial apprehension!
